Paddle Shift

Sullivan Motorsport Announces: Paddle Shift Controller (PSC) Patent Pending AU2017902295
Paddle Shift Controller for sequential (manual) gearboxes for Fuel injected or Carby racing cars.

The Sullivan Motorsport Paddle Shift Controller has been developed over the last 3 years in dedicated racing cars using manual sequential gearboxes and pneumatic actuators. The PSC2.03 leverages extensive live testing from previous models (PSC0.3, EODI and EODII) to combine the most desired features for the driver & builder. The PSC will work with most sequential manual gearboxes with fuel injected or carby engines and enables numerous user customisable features including; Flat Up shifts and throttle matched Down shifts.

The PSC2.03 is a closed loop system, servicing numerous inputs including; Up & Down Paddles, Gear Position Sensor, Throttle Position sensor, Tach input, Speed sensors, Neutral/Reverse and Clutch lockouts and a combination of safety features to prevent accidental shifts or shifts on componet failure.

Outputs will service +12V pneumatic actuators for; Up shift, Down shift, Throttle blip, Aux circuit and ECU/IGN cut.

The PSC2.03 is designed to prevent triggering from undesirable environments or EMI and uses sofisticated optical isolation and over-voltage protection on all inputs and outputs.

The PSC2.03 provides the user a Menu controlled on-board LCD interface allowing direct access to the system settings without the use of additional software or a Laptop.

The Sullivan Motorsport Paddle Shift Controller RRP is US$1,199 and comes complete with detailed instructions and components to install in your vehicle. Optional remote gear display unit and menu control dials are also available.

The Sullvan Motorsport Paddle Shift Controller is designed and built in Australia using carefully selected quality components suited to the harsh ennvironments of a race car. As a Race Car Designer, Builder and Driver you can be assured the product will meet or exceed your budget and performance expectations with strong local support.

Paddle Shift Controller - Overview

Paddle Shift Controller - Getting Started

Key Safety Features include:

Safety Features - technology

The Sullivan Motorsport Paddle Shift Controller has been designed and built with high quality electronic components, selected for their tolerance to heat (85C) & vibration (10G), whilst allowing suitable operating safety margins. This improves operating life expectancy and reduces component failures. The microprocessor and peripheral circuitry has been hardened for use in harsh automotive environments, however the enclosure is not water proof and must be kept cool & dry. Electronic hardening techniques include the following items:

Aluminium enclosure provides EMI & fire protection.

Built in power supply with voltage regulator & filters, ensures the system is not susceptible to typical automotive voltage spikes & other electrical interference.

All input & output circuits are over-voltage diode protected and optically isolated up to 4000volts, to help ensure external wiring failures (or short circuits) do not result in unintended Paddle Shift operations.

Output channel component failures will result in an open-circuit condition limiting the possibility of unintentional gear shift operations.

Safety Features - operational

The Clutch and Neutral/Reverse lockout features prevent accidental operation or engagement of gears without the driver activating the required over-ride switch and depressing the clutch at the same time as requesting an up or down shift (via the paddles). ie. 3-way safe.

This prevents accidental shifting from neutral to reverse or neutral to 1st gear when idling or testing the vehicle.

It also prevents accidental downshifts from 1st into neutral or reverse when in racing conditions or at speeds over walking pace.

The throttle blip feature is disabled at slow speeds & low RPM to prevent accidental engine power surges when downshifting in the pits or paddock area.

Flat shifting is disabled at low speed and low RPM minimising over-revving or loss of control on upshift.

Flat shifting is disabled when in Neutral or Reverse to prevent accidental engagement of 1st gear.

ECU cut is disabled when shifting from neutral to 1st gear – to prevent engine stalling.
